Environmental Health

Environmental health services play a vital role in protecting public health, safety, and community well-being. Local Shires and City Councils employ Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) to monitor and enforce public health standards. Their key responsibilities include supervision of a diverse range of issues such as food premises and food handling procedures, sewerage and septic tank inspections, investigate food complaints, waste disposal, water quality, infectious disease monitoring and control, noise complaints, pesticides and pest control.

Food Business Registrations

Food premises within the Shire of Cuballing must be registered in alliance with the Food Act 2008 and the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. In order to register your Food Business, the following needs to be completed:

A Food Business Notification is a simple process used for low-risk or exempt businesses to inform the local council of their operations. A Food Act Registration is an intensive, mandatory licensing process for higher-risk businesses, requiring formal approval and health inspections prior to opening. The registration process still applies to business that sell only packaged food compared to business that sell food that may be potentially hazardous.

Once an application has been lodged with the Shire of Cuballing, 1 of two things may occur:

  • The application is granted with or without conditions and a certificate of registration (which specifies the premises) is granted
  • The Application is refused with reasoning of the refusal put into a formal letter.

The Food Business registration remains in place until cancelled. An annual inspection of the food business is completed at the cost of the owner. For the current financial year, its $167.00 for the food premises inspection.

In the event that you are purchasing a food business, a new registration should be completed and lodged with the Shire of Cuballing. This ensures that the food registration contains the details of the current Business owner. In addition, Section 113 of the Food Act 2008 makes it an offence to not inform the appropriate local government enforcement agency of any changes to a registered food business including if the business ceases to be conducted at those premises or if the food business is sold.

Septic Tanks

A septic tank is a sealed underground system designed to treat household wastewater on-site. It works by allowing waste to separate naturally, with heavier solids settling at the bottom and lighter materials forming a layer on the surface. Anaerobic bacteria then break down the accumulated waste, while the partially treated liquid effluent flows to a leach drain or soakage area for safe dispersal into the surrounding soil.

Within the Shire of Cuballing, some properties are connected to Deep sewerage meaning they are connected directly to the main sewer line. It is common in the Shire of Cuballing to have some properties that aren’t connected to deep sewerage, meaning they require a septic tank in order to dispose of their waste.

In order to apply for septic tank approval, you must submit the following to the Shire of Cuballing:
